An Urgent Appeal!!

The following is from Shlomo Vilozny of Congregation Kol Tefillah:

An urgent appeal from the leaders of the Santa Cruz Jewish Community

On Wednesday, March 15th, the Resource Center for Non Violence (RCNV), headed by Scott Kennedy, has invited Prof. Norman Finkelstein to speak at Veterans Hall in downtown Santa Cruz. Prof. Finkelstein is a well-known Holocaust minimizer who maintains that Jews are exploiting the Holocaust for political and financial gains. He has referred to Eli Wiesel as a “clown” and the Simon Weisenthal center as “a gang of heartless and immoral crooks”.

The RCNV has angered many in town by its extremely one-sided depiction of the Israeli-Arab conflict. However, inviting a speaker with demonstrated anti-semitic rhetoric crosses a line. A letter from a dozen Jewish leaders of our community – representing every Jewish organization in town-- has been sent to the RCNV requesting their reconsideration of this very offensive event. This letter has been ignored.

We are asking you to join us to express our outrage. We want to send a message that hate speech, especially by the RCNV, is offensive to Jews and to non-Jews as well.

Specifically we ask you to:

1. Participate in a respectful and quiet vigil in front of the Veterans Memorial Hall, 846 Front St, when Prof. Finkelstein is speaking. We will meet at 7:30PM

2. Send a letter to the Sentinel (ediorial@santacruzsentinel.com) on Thursday (03/16/2006) morning, following the demonstration - expressing your outrage.

3. Send a letter to the RCNV (information@rcnv.org) and Scott Kennedy (kenncruz@pacbell.net) asking them why would they persist in offending the Jewish community.

Thank you for your help!

Just to keep people abreast, Rabbi Yonah just posted an excellent piece (with video) of anti-Semite Abdel Malik Ali (who has visited UCSC in the past) speaking at CSULB recently. View it here.

Rabbi Yo is working on actually cutting funding to the Muslim Student Alliance for spreading this kind of anti-Semitism.

The sad thing is that I am never really ever surpised with the guest speakers from the Resource Center for Non-Violence. They always bring in a self-hating Jew to show the "other" side of the Israeli-Arab conflict.
